What is the Church of Pakistan?

Many won’t know much about the Christian Communities in Pakistan. The Church of Pakistan features quite large in my book, because Edwardes College is a Church Foundation. The College was established in 1900 and it grew out of Edwardes High School that was founded in the Old City of Peshawar in 1856.

The beginnings of Christianity in the Subcontinent can be traced to the work of Christian missions from the 16th century onwards. After Partition in 1947 not a lot changed in the churches in Pakistan. Then in 1970 the Church of Pakistan was formed by the union of Anglicans, Methodists, Lutherans and Scottish Presbyterians Plans for this union go back to the 1920’s, and the model was the Church of South India which was formed in 1947.

As Principal of Edwardes College , I found myself negotiating a tightrope between the Muslim and Christian communities. In fact Edwardes College was a wonderful haven of interfaith harmony – most of the time…
